The Zanskar Valley trek connects the remote district capital Padum with the Indus Valley near Leh through a succession of high mountain passes and deep river gorges, passing through one of the most geographically isolated inhabited areas in the world. The Zanskar kingdom was historically cut off from the outside world for six or more months each year when snow closed all passes. The summer route crosses multiple passes above 5,000 metres, descends into deep gorges carved by the Zanskar River, and passes through ancient Buddhist gompa (monastery) complexes perched on dramatic cliff faces. The landscape is stark and otherworldly: ochre and purple mountains, glaciated peaks, and the turquoise thread of the Zanskar River winding through its canyon. Inner Line Permit (ILP) required for foreign nationals. Regulations and permit requirements change — verify current requirements before travel.

All logistics (guide, horses, camping equipment, food) should be arranged through a registered Leh-based trekking agency well before arrival.

Safety context

The entire trek is at very high altitude — full acclimatisation in Leh is essential before attempting any Zanskar crossing. River crossings in July and August can be dangerous due to glacial melt. Rescue logistics are extremely complex — evacuation is measured in days, not hours.

This is a genuine expedition-level undertaking for the high route variants. Do not underestimate logistics — fuel, food, shelter, and route-finding all require careful planning. A satellite communicator is strongly recommended.
