Via Adriatica

Route overview

The Via Adriatica is a long-distance trail of approximately 1,100 kilometres that runs the length of the Croatian Adriatic coast from Cape Kamenjak in the Istrian peninsula to the Montenegrin border near Prevlaka. The route combines coastal walking, island hopping, and mountain traverses through the Dinaric Alps, offering a comprehensive experience of the Croatian coast and hinterland. The trail passes through the Istrian peninsula, the Kvarner Gulf islands of Krk and Cres, the Velebit mountain range, the Paklenica National Park, the Dalmatian coast with its historic cities of Zadar, Šibenik, and Split, and the southern mountains of Biokovo and Konavle. The landscape is karst limestone, with dramatic coastal cliffs, deeply indented bays, and mountain ridges rising directly from the sea. The Via Adriatica is a relatively new trail, established in the 2020s, and is still developing its infrastructure. Safety context

Mountain sections in the Velebit and Biokovo are exposed to bora wind. Some coastal sections have steep drops. Island ferry schedules must be planned carefully. Summer heat on the coast is extreme.

The trail is new and infrastructure is still developing. Some sections require road walking. Island connections depend on seasonal ferry schedules. The full traverse is a major undertaking of two months or more.
