Route overview

The Ulster Way is Northern Ireland's principal long-distance walking route, a waymarked circuit covering the province and linking many of its best-known landscapes, including the Mourne Mountains, the Sperrins, the Antrim coast and Fermanagh's lakelands. It is maintained through Northern Ireland's outdoor recreation network, coordinated with local councils and Outdoor Recreation NI. Given its scale, the Ulster Way is almost always walked in sections rather than as a continuous through-hike, with well-documented shorter loops and quality sections such as the Causeway Coast Way and Mourne Way forming part of the wider network. Waymarking and path quality vary by section, with some stretches on quiet rural roads and others on dedicated off-road trail, reflecting the route's long development history since it was first proposed in the 1970s.
