One-day volcanic traverse from Mangatepopo to Ketetahi across the active Tongariro massif, passing Red Crater and the Emerald Lakes.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing covers 19 kilometres through Tongariro National Park, crossing the active volcanic terrain between Mangatepopo valley in the west and Ketetahi in the east. The park is a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for both its outstanding natural landscape and its cultural significance to the Māori people, for whom the mountains are sacred. The route climbs steeply from the Mangatepopo valley floor through a barren volcanic landscape of lava fields and scoria, passing close to the active vents of Mount Ngauruhoe before reaching the highest point of the route at Red Crater (1,886 m). The characteristic Emerald Lakes — brilliant turquoise volcanic crater lakes — lie just below the ridge on the descent and are one of the most photographed sights in New Zealand. Access and logistics

Permits and access

No permit required, but a conservation fee may apply for transport providers. Ketetahi Hut is closed and not available for overnight stays on this section.

Bookings

Shuttle buses from Whakapapa Village or National Park township must be booked in advance during peak season. Departure from Mangatepopo car park; finish at Ketetahi car park.

Safety context

Weather can change very rapidly on the exposed summit plateau. Do not attempt the route in snow, ice, high winds, or poor visibility without appropriate equipment and experience. Carry warm layers, waterproofs, and food even in good weather. An active hazard alert system applies to the Ngauruhoe vent area.

The crossing should not be attempted if weather is forecast to deteriorate. Many parties underestimate the exposed conditions near the top. Shuttle transport must be pre-booked.
