Stanley Glacier Trail

A popular moderate hike combining fire ecology, waterfalls and a glacier-backed alpine basin.

Route overview

Climb through regenerating forest to an alpine basin below Stanley Glacier and surrounding rock walls.

Stanley Glacier Trail rises through a landscape renewed by wildfire before entering a broad basin enclosed by steep limestone walls. Glacier meltwater falls from the cliffs and the maintained day-hike route offers strong alpine scenery without requiring entry onto ice or off-trail fossil areas.

Access and logistics

Permits and access
National park admission normally applies; no permit is normally required for the standard day hike. Guided Burgess Shale fossil hikes are separate controlled experiences and require booking.

Safety context

Turn around at the maintained route endpoint. Do not approach the glacier, climb unstable scree or enter restricted fossil areas without an authorised guided hike. Carry bear spray, extra layers and enough water for exposed alpine conditions. Check current official conditions, closures, weather and access rules before departure.

Rapid weather change, sun exposure, loose rock, lingering snow, rockfall, wildlife, crowded parking and off-trail temptation.
