Route overview
St Cuthbert's Way runs from Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders to Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, off the Northumberland coast, tracing places associated with the life of St Cuthbert, a 7th-century monk and bishop. The trail is one of the UK's recognised long-distance paths, waymarked throughout. The route crosses the Cheviot Hills at the England–Scotland border before descending toward the Northumberland coast, finishing with a tidal causeway or sand crossing to Lindisfarne that must be timed with the tides. Historic sites along the way include Melrose Abbey, Kirk Yetholm and the priory ruins on Lindisfarine itself, giving the trail a strong heritage character alongside its Border and coastal landscapes.

Safety context
The final approach to Lindisfarne crosses tidal sands or a causeway that floods with the tide; crossing times must be checked in advance and taken seriously.
Misjudging the tidal crossing to Lindisfarne is a genuinely dangerous and recurring mistake; walkers have needed rescue after being caught by the incoming tide.
