Route overview
The Speyside Way is one of Scotland's Great Trails, running approximately 137 kilometres from Aviemore on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park to Buckie on the Moray Firth. The route follows the River Spey valley, one of Scotland's most famous salmon rivers, through malt whisky distilling country and ancient Caledonian pine forest. From Aviemore the trail passes through the Rothiemurchus Estate pine woods, follows the Spey through Boat of Garten and Craigellachie, and continues through the whisky towns of Aberlour, Dufftown, and Rothes. The final section descends to the coast at the fishing village of Buckie. The landscape is a mix of riverbank path, forest track, minor road, and moorland. The route is well waymarked with the purple thistle symbol. It is particularly popular in autumn when the birch and pine forests turn golden.
