Route overview

Climb steep forest steps and ladders through Skeleton Gorge, then continue across open plateau terrain to Maclear's Beacon.

The Smuts Track begins with a sustained climb through shaded Afromontane forest in Skeleton Gorge. Log and stone steps lead to wooden ladders that bypass steeper rock before the route emerges into open, unshaded plateau terrain and continues to Maclear's Beacon. Wet conditions materially increase the risk on the forest section.
