A dramatic descent through one of Europe's longest gorges, in Crete's White Mountains, finishing near the Libyan Sea.
Route overview
The Samaria Gorge Trail descends through the Samaria Gorge in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of Crete, one of the longest gorges in Europe, within the Samaria National Park. The route runs from the Omalos plateau at the gorge's head down to the abandoned village of Samaria and onward to the coastal settlement of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. The trail passes towering limestone walls that narrow dramatically at the famous 'Iron Gates' section, where the gorge sides close to just a few metres apart, and is home to the kri-kri, a wild goat species found only on Crete. The park operates on a strict seasonal schedule and is closed outside the dry season due to flash flood risk. Most visitors walk the gorge in a single long day, typically arranging transport back from Agia Roumeli by boat and bus, as there is no vehicle access at the southern end.
