Route overview

The Fishermen's Trail is the coastal section of the Rota Vicentina network, running approximately 230 kilometres along the south-west coast of Portugal from Sines in the Alentejo to Sagres at the south-western tip of Europe. The route follows the paths used by local fishermen to access their favourite fishing spots along the cliffs, offering some of the most dramatic coastal walking in Portugal. The trail passes through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, one of Europe's last stretches of wild Atlantic coastline. The landscape is a mix of high sandstone cliffs, hidden coves, wild beaches, and coastal scrub. The route passes through the fishing villages of Porto Covo, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Zambujeira do Mar, and Carrapateira. The Fishermen's Trail is well waymarked and supported by a network of accommodation in the coastal villages. Safety context

Cliff-top paths are exposed to Atlantic winds and can be dangerous in bad weather. Tide times must be checked for beach walking. Summer heat requires careful water management. Some steep descents to coves are loose underfoot.

The trail is exposed to sun with limited shade. Summer temperatures exceed 30°C. The constant ups and downs along the cliffs are tiring. Accommodation in smaller villages is limited.
