Rheinsteig
A premium long-distance trail along the eastern bank of the Rhine, passing castles, vineyards and the UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge.
Route overview
The Rheinsteig runs approximately 320 kilometres along the right (eastern) bank of the Rhine from Wiesbaden to Bonn, passing through the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The trail was developed and is certified as a premium long-distance path (Qualitätsweg) by the German Hiking Institute. The route climbs repeatedly between riverside villages and vineyard-covered slopes, passing dozens of castles and ruins overlooking the Rhine, including views of the Loreley rock. The certified path standard means consistently good waymarking and a high proportion of natural, unpaved surfaces. Most hikers complete the Rheinsteig over sixteen to twenty days, though the well-developed regional rail network along the Rhine also makes shorter day-section hikes very practical.
