The Retezat Traverse crosses Retezat National Park in the Southern Carpathians, established in 1935 as Romania's first national park and now a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The range is known for having the highest concentration of glacial lakes in the Romanian Carpathians, including Bucura, the largest glacial lake in the country. The route links mountain cabins and camping areas across rocky, glacially carved terrain, with old-growth forest in the lower valleys giving way to open alpine scenery above the treeline.
