Route overview
The Prague–Vienna Greenway is a long-distance route of approximately 450 kilometres that follows the Vltava and Danube river valleys from Prague to Vienna. Originally designed as a cycling route, it is equally suitable for walking and combines riverside paths, forest trails, and quiet country roads through the South Bohemian and Lower Austrian countryside. The route leaves Prague through the Vltava valley, passing the castles of Hluboká and Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic, crosses the border into Austria at České Velenice, and continues through the Waldviertel and Wachau wine regions to Vienna. The landscape is a mix of river meadows, rolling farmland, oak forest, and vineyard-covered hills. The Greenway is well marked and supported by regular accommodation in historic towns. It is an excellent cultural walking route, linking two of central Europe's most beautiful capitals through a landscape of castles, abbeys, and traditional wine villages. The walking is easy with no technical sections.

Safety context
The route follows quiet roads that still carry traffic. Riverside sections can flood after heavy rain. Some vineyard paths are steep and exposed in hot weather.
The route was designed primarily for cyclists. Some sections follow asphalt roads. The full distance takes three to four weeks of walking.
