Pirin Traverse

Route overview

The Pirin Traverse crosses Pirin National Park in south-west Bulgaria, a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing some of the country's most dramatic alpine scenery, including Vihren, Bulgaria's second-highest peak, and numerous glacial lakes. The route links mountain huts (hizhi) maintained by the Bulgarian Tourist Union, crossing exposed rocky ridgelines with sections requiring scrambling and, in places, fixed cables typical of the range's granite and marble terrain. Pirin's relatively compact size compared with the Rila range makes a full traverse achievable in less than a week, though the terrain's technicality means it should not be underestimated.
