Ötztal Trek

Route overview

The Ötztal Trek (Ötztaler Urweg / Ötztal hut circuit routes) links a series of Alpine Club huts through the Ötztal Alps, a heavily glaciated range on the Austrian–Italian border best known outside hiking circles as the site of the Ötzi ice mummy discovery. Stages cross high passes between 2,500 m and 3,000 m, several with views directly onto glaciers, and pass through huts such as Vernagthütte and Similaunhütte close to the Italian border. The combination of glacier scenery and well-established Alpine Club infrastructure makes it a popular but still demanding multi-day objective. Some stages border glaciated terrain and may require care on moraine or snow patches even in summer, particularly early in the season.
