King Ludwig's Way (Königsweg) covers 120 kilometres through the lake district and pre-Alpine foothills of Bavaria, from Starnberg on the shore of Lake Starnberg south to Füssen at the foot of the Alps near the Austrian border. The route was established in the 1970s to connect the key sites associated with the nineteenth-century Bavarian king Ludwig II, famous for his fairy-tale castles. The trail passes through gently rolling woodland, farmland, and lake shores before entering the Pfaffenwinkel region of Upper Bavaria with its baroque pilgrimage churches and characteristic onion-domed towers. The final approach to Füssen passes directly beneath Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles — the most photographed buildings in Germany. King Ludwig's Way is well-suited to walkers seeking a moderate scenic route through a culturally rich landscape rather than a mountain challenge. The terrain is gentle by Alpine standards, making it accessible to walkers without significant mountain experience while still offering substantial daily walking distances.

Summer weekends near Neuschwanstein are extremely busy with tourists. The trail itself is quieter but road crossings near the castle approach require care.
