The Kangchenjunga Circuit trek encircles the base of Kangchenjunga (8,586 m) in Nepal's far east, visiting both the Kangchenjunga North Base Camp (5,143 m) and South Base Camp (4,780 m) in a full circuit through the Kangchenjunga Conservation Area. The region is significantly more remote and less visited than the Annapurna and Everest trekking areas. The approach from Taplejung involves multiple days of walking through rhododendron and oak forests, terraced farmland, and small villages before the trail enters the high terrain of the conservation area. The Sherpa and Rai communities along the route have distinct cultures and traditions that differ from the more touristically developed central Nepal trail regions. A restricted area permit from the Government of Nepal is required, and trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed guide and walk in a minimum group of two people.
