Jotunheimen Traverse

A classic Norwegian high mountain route across Jotunheimen, the Home of the Giants, passing Norway's highest peaks, glacial lakes, and DNT mountain cabins.

Route overview

The Jotunheimen Traverse is a classic Norwegian high mountain route of approximately 60 kilometres across Jotunheimen National Park, known as the “Home of the Giants” and containing the highest peaks in northern Europe. The trail runs from Gjendesheim to Spiterstulen or Eidsbugarden, crossing the heart of the mountain massif. The route passes beside the turquoise lake Gjende, crosses the Besseggen ridge with its famous knife-edge arête, and continues through the high valleys surrounded by Norway's tallest mountains including Galdhøpiggen and Glittertind. The trail uses the Norwegian Trekking Association's network of staffed and self-service cabins. The Besseggen ridge crossing is the most famous section, offering dramatic views of the contrasting green Gjende and blue Bessvatnet lakes. The terrain is rocky mountain path with some steep ascents and exposed sections. The traverse is demanding but accessible to fit walkers with some mountain experience.
