Route overview
The John o' Groats Trail runs along Scotland's rugged north-east coastline from Inverness to John o' Groats, the traditional northern end point of the Land's End to John o' Groats end-to-end walking and cycling route. It was developed by a dedicated charitable trust to fill a long-standing gap in coastal trail provision for this stretch of coast. The route passes dramatic sea cliffs, fishing villages such as Helmsdale and Wick, and remote stretches of the Caithness coastline, with waymarking and path improvements progressively developed and maintained by the John o' Groats Trail Trust. Some sections remain less developed than Scotland's official Great Trails network, so hikers should check the trust's current route notes, particularly for any sections requiring care on rougher coastal ground.
