John Muir Way

Route overview

The John Muir Way is a long-distance trail of approximately 215 kilometres that crosses central Scotland from Helensburgh on the Firth of Clyde to Dunbar on the North Sea coast. The trail commemorates John Muir, the Scottish-born conservationist who founded the American national park movement, who was born in Dunbar in 1838. The route follows the Firth of Clyde coast, the Forth and Clyde Canal, the Union Canal, the city of Edinburgh, and the East Lothian coast to Dunbar. The landscape is a mix of coastal walking, canal towpaths, urban parks, and rolling farmland. The trail is less mountainous than the West Highland Way, making it accessible to a wider range of walkers. The John Muir Way is well waymarked and supported by regular accommodation. It offers an excellent introduction to Scottish long-distance walking, combining industrial heritage, canal engineering, coastal scenery, and the historic cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Stirling.
