A network of unmarked trails through Iceland's remote Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, one of the last truly uninhabited wildernesses in Europe.
Route overview
The Hornstrandir Nature Reserve occupies the northernmost part of Iceland's Westfjords peninsula, an area abandoned by its last permanent residents in the 1950s and now managed by the Icelandic Environment Agency as a protected wilderness with no roads, permanent settlements or mobile coverage in most areas. Trails through the reserve are mostly unmarked or lightly marked, and hikers navigate between fjords, sea cliffs and Arctic tundra using maps and route knowledge rather than a single defined path. The reserve is accessible only by boat from towns such as Ísafjörður during the short summer season, and is notable for its Arctic fox population and dramatic bird cliffs. Multi-day trips of three to seven days are common, camping wild within the reserve's regulations, with all supplies carried in given the complete absence of services once inside the reserve.

Safety context

This is not a beginner destination — there is no mobile phone coverage in most of the reserve and rescue response times can be very long.
