The High Tatras Traverse, known in Slovak as the Tatranská magistrála, is a classic high-level alpine trail of approximately 100 kilometres that traverses the Slovak High Tatras from east to west. The Tatras are the highest range in the Carpathians, with Gerlachovský štít reaching 2,655 metres, and the traverse offers some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in central Europe. The trail runs from Tatranská Kotlina or Žiar to Podbanské, crossing the main ridge through high mountain passes, glacial valleys, and beside alpine lakes. It passes through the Mengusovská dolina, the Štrbské Pleso lake resort, the Mengusovská dolina, and the Kôprová dolina. The route uses a network of mountain huts operated by the Slovak Mountaineering Association. The Tatranská magistrála is well waymarked and is the most famous long-distance trail in Slovakia. Safety context
High passes are exposed to alpine weather. Some sections are rocky and steep. Glacier remnants exist in the highest valleys. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.
Mountain huts must be booked well in advance in summer. The trail is popular with Slovak and Polish walkers. Some technical sections require a head for heights.
