Cross-park traverse from the Aorere Valley over the Gouland Downs plateau to the Karamea Coast through Kahurangi National Park.

The Heaphy Track is one of the ten officially designated Great Walks of New Zealand, managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC). It crosses 78 kilometres through Kahurangi National Park — the largest national park in New Zealand's South Island — from Brown Hut near Collingwood in the north to Kohaihai at the southern end of the Heaphy River near Karamea. The route traverses several distinct ecological zones within Kahurangi. The high central plateau is open tussock and limestone karst country with expansive views on clear days. The descent to the west coast passes through groves of nikau palms — the southernmost palm trees in the world — and dense coastal podocarp forest before reaching the Tasman Sea cliffs. The final coastal section along the Heaphy River mouth is one of the most dramatic finishes of any New Zealand Great Walk. Bookings

Great Walk hut tickets and campsite bookings are essential and available from DOC (doc.govt.nz). Book as early as possible for the October–April peak season.

Safety context

River levels can rise very rapidly after rain in the Karamea area — heed any DOC warnings and do not cross flooded rivers. The track is well-marked but remote; emergency locator beacons are recommended.

Both trailheads (Brown Hut and Kohaihai) are remote and require pre-arranged transport. Book huts early — Great Walk huts are heavily subscribed from October to April.
