Grande Rota do Alentejo (GR11 Portugal)

Route overview

The Grande Rota do Alentejo (waymarked as GR11 in Portugal, distinct from the Spanish Pyrenean GR11) is a long circular route through the Alentejo, Portugal's largest and most rural region, known for cork oak dehesas, rolling wheat plains and whitewashed hilltop towns. The trail is developed and maintained by the Portuguese hiking federation, Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo de Portugal. The route links historic walled towns such as Marvão, Monsaraz and Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage city, passing through some of Portugal's least-visited countryside away from the busier coastal trails. Given the Alentejo's hot, dry summers, the trail is best walked outside the peak summer months, and most hikers cover it in sections rather than as a single continuous trip due to its considerable length.

Summer temperatures in the Alentejo can be extreme; the route is best avoided in July–August, and water planning is essential in warmer months.

Underestimating heat and water needs in the open Alentejo plains is a serious and recurring risk on this route.
