GR34 Sentier des Douaniers

Route overview

The GR34, widely known as the Sentier des Douaniers (customs officers' path), follows almost the entire coastline of Brittany in north-west France. Originally patrolled by customs officers watching for smugglers, the path today is one of France's most celebrated grande randonnée coastal routes, maintained by the Fédération Française de la Randonnée Pédestre. The full route runs along dramatic granite headlands, wild moorland, sandy bays and traditional fishing ports. Because of its length, most walkers tackle it in multi-day sections rather than as a single through-hike, with the Côte de Granit Rose and the Crozon peninsula among the most popular stretches. Waymarking follows the standard French GR white-and-red stripes. Accommodation is well developed along the coast in towns and villages, making logistics straightforward for section hikers.

Safety context

Coastal cliff paths can be exposed in high wind and heavy rain. Tide tables should be checked where the route crosses tidal zones or beaches.

The GR34 is very long — attempting large daily distances without acclimatisation to coastal terrain is a common early mistake.
