Goldsteig

Route overview

The Goldsteig is a long-distance trail through the Bavarian Forest and Upper Palatinate Forest in eastern Bavaria, running close to the Czech border for much of its length. It is certified as a "Qualitätsweg" premium trail by the German Hiking Institute (Deutsches Wanderinstitut), reflecting consistently maintained waymarking and path quality. The route passes through the Bavarian Forest National Park, Germany's oldest national park, along with numerous smaller nature reserves, historic glassmaking towns and granite ridgelines that give the region its name (referring to the sparkle of the local stone). Given its length, most hikers walk it in stages, with the well-developed network of guesthouses along the way, typical of German long-distance trail infrastructure, making multi-day planning straightforward.
