The route begins on a marked valley track through alpine vegetation. Beyond the head of the valley, permanent markers disappear and parties must navigate toward Gertrude Stream, Black Lake and the saddle. The upper route uses steep granite slabs, boulders and steel cables before reaching the exposed viewpoint above the Milford landscape.

DOC’s instruction is direct: if there is rain or snow, do not go. Wet or frosty granite is treacherous and falls can be fatal. Multiple unbridged crossings, routefinding above the bush line, avalanche terrain and severe exposure require advanced alpine competence, a topographic map and a personal locator beacon. Avalanches most commonly occur from May to November but can occur whenever snow remains. Both partners need relevant avalanche training and rescue equipment when entering avalanche terrain.
