Alta Via 3

Route overview

Alta Via 3 is one of the numbered long-distance high routes across the Italian Dolomites, running roughly from the Val Pusteria in the north to Longarone in the south. It is generally considered more technically demanding and less crowded than Alta Via 1, with several sections requiring via ferrata equipment and comfort with exposed scrambling. The route crosses varied Dolomite terrain, including the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, the Marmarole group and remote high passes with limited services compared to the busier Alta Via 1 and 2 routes. Refuges along the way provide overnight accommodation. Given its technical sections, Alta Via 3 is generally recommended for hikers with prior via ferrata experience and a head for exposure.

Underestimating the technical difficulty compared with the more popular Alta Via 1 is a common mistake among first-time Dolomite hikers.
